Presenting information is really important. You need to start practicing giving demos.

During this module, you must attend at least one demo session. We highly recommend you give at least one demo in a demo session, as well. We recommend you come to more, and give more. Your demo can be on anything you want. You can attend this demo session in any sprint. After this module, you will be required to give at least one demo per module.

There are demo sessions every Tuesday evening and Friday morning. They are advertised on Slack.

Aim for a 5 minute demo. But your demo must be at least 1 minute and at most 10 minutes long. Check out our guide about presenting.

You will need to attach a screenshot when submitting your Step for this Module. Make sure to take a screenshot of you on the call, showing that one of the following members of the CYF team was on your call:

  • Daniel Wagner-Hall
  • Karen Klein
  • Colin Farquhar
  • Poonam Rajput
  • Lรฉon McGregor
  • Peter Mudra
  • Liam Greenfield

If you are not available during any of the demo times, please message on Slack to arrange an alternate time.

Why are we doing this?

https://curriculum.codeyourfuture.io/how-this-works/sprints/self-educate/prep/#importance-of-prep

The first thing you should do every week is the prep. The prep will help you do everything else. The prep teaches you the main concepts of the week and then the coursework provides projects and exercises to help you consolidate and practice that learning.

If you have gone straight to the coursework or straight to class and you haven’t done the prep first, then go back and do the prep.

How to get help

  1. Share your blockers in #cyf-questions-support. Take the opportunity to practice asking your question like a developer: https://curriculum.codeyourfuture.io/guides/asking-questions
  2. Book a pair programming session with a mentor in the #cyf-pair-programming channel
  3. Attend a mid-week study session online
  4. Write down your questions and bring them to class

You should do the prep every week.

Mandatory Tasks

These tasks will help consolidate your learning for this sprint. You should complete as many of these as possible before class on Saturday.

Watch The power of believing that you can improve | Carol Dweck | TED and Neuroplasticity.

Write your reflections on why it is important to have a growth mindset as a developer and how a growth mindset will positively impact you in your career in the long term. Try to answer the following questions:

  • When did I have a closed mindset this week, and why?
  • When did I have an open mindset this week, and why?
  • What have I learnt about myself, as a result?
  • What will I do differently next time?

Learning Objectives

Why are we doing this?

Spend at least 20 minutes per kata, find time at least three times a week to complete this.

Find the Collection called “CYF Onboarding” on the CodeYourFuture account. You are not required to know all the answers here. Use this exercise as an opportunity to practice our “question-asking” habit. Some of these katas might use syntax you haven’t encountered yet and that is totally fine. Don’t go over 2 hours of time spent on this.

Checking your progress: Check your Codewars completion status via the Codewars Progress Checker.

  1. Follow the link: https://codeyourfuture.github.io/Codewars-Progress-Checker
  2. Put your codewars username into the input bar at the top of the page.
  3. Use this page to track completion and share progress at the end of each module.

Why are we doing this?

These challenges are designed to develop your problem-solving skills. It’s all about building up programs case by case, writing a simple unit test that describes and tests each assertion.

This is a practice of logical reasoning.

Learning Objectives

Why are we doing this?

As you learn with us, you will often use other curricula as well. We encourage you to explore and use quality free resources that are available online. Mentors will most often refer you to MDN and this site also has a free curriculum you can use: MDN Curriculum to work on anything you want to explore more or feel you need more work on. MDN is a high quality resource.

We also make a lot of use of:

Bookmark all these resources now. However, the best way to quickly find help with your programming topic is to search with a specific language and resource as keywords: topic language resource. For example

for loop js mdn

This will quickly take you to a well targeted resource.

You will use many other resources as you progress. Not all resources are equal. Spend fifteen to thirty minutes googling other programming resources now. Pick one you think is valuable and one you think is probably not very useful. Share the links in Slack, explaining how you made your decision. Look at what other people are posting. Do you agree with their evaluations? Why or why not? Comment with your thoughts.
